Raising children isn’t easy. In fact, it’s hard. Really, hard. Raising teens just increases the level of difficulty even more. This video by Landon MacDonald, which you can watch below, explains some ways his own parents did their job well during his teen years. Here is a synopsis of the parenting tips he shares:
Landon shares that his parents reevaluated their rules as he aged. This made him feel heard and respected as a teen. This, in turn, gave him the freedom to “choose” to stay home and spend more time with them. They also allowed him to earn privileges like staying out later by remaining faithful to their wishes.
His parents were spur of the moment people. They loved having fun with their kids. He recommends you do something random and fun. God is creative and fun, so parents should be as well. Everything doesn’t have to be planned.
It was important to Landon that his parents were the same no matter where they were. They behaved the same in church as they did at home. They were never fake. Being fake is the single worst thing you can do as a parent, especially in the teen years.
The Bible has a lot to say about living a life of consistency as well. In Galatians 6:3, it says “If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves” Luke 12:2 says “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.” Both of these verses prove the importance God places on living a genuine life.
Parenting is never an easy task and you are sure to mess up some along the way. However, by keeping the points listed above in mind, you will be one step closer towards getting it right.
