Temptation is something all Christians must fight on a regular basis. Learning how to combat this tool of the devil is vitally important to living a life pleasing to God. Thankfully, we can learn how to successfully handle temptation by looking to Jesus as an example and by watching this video entitled “The Bible: Jesus Meets Satan.”
Matthew 4:1-11 tells the story about Jesus being tempted in the wilderness. His temptation by the devil took place after Jesus fasted for forty days and nights. He was hungry and the devil knew this and tempted him to eat by saying in verse 3 “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered the devil’s temptation by saying “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
The conversation between Jesus and the devil went on. Next, the devil tempted Jesus by telling him to “throw Yourself from the highest point of the temple.” The devil said that angels could come to Jesus’ aide and his foot wouldn’t strike a stone.
Jesus’ answer to him this time is in verse 7, it says “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
The next temptation included the devil telling Jesus he would give him all the kingdoms of the world if only Jesus would “bow down and worship me.” Jesus’ response this time was similar to before, he again quoted scripture and said in verse 10, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” At this point, the devil left and angels came to attend Jesus.
This exchange shows us as believers how to withstand the devil’s temptations, to quote scriptures and the truth of God to him. Doing this, he will flee.
