Religion. What does that word mean to you? Does it communicate grace, acceptance, forgiveness? In all likelihood, no. In most cases, the word religion implies, legality, judgment, and rules. This video published by Jefferson Bethke explores the issue in a unique way and explains the importance of loving Jesus while hating religion.
According to the video, religion has been the impetus for many bad things. For example, consider how many people have been killed and wars have been waged in its name. The problem with religion is that it doesn’t get to the core of who we are, it doesn’t change us from the inside out. Instead, it’s more like a list of chores we need to check off.
Jesus Himself preached against religion. One of the best examples of this is the woman caught in adultery found in John 8:3-11. The verse begins “Now in the Law of Moses commanded us to stone such women, what then do you say?” The “religious” people of the day were trying to get Jesus to stone the woman for her sin. He surprised them by saying, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Jesus understood that while the woman did sin, she deserved grace. Jesus offered her grace, while the religious people offered nothing but judgment and condemnation. In the same way, religion today many times offers nothing but judgment. Conversely, Jesus still offers grace to all who seek after Him.
This video features a poem, rap, that talks about the grace of Jesus and the negative aspects of religion. Be sure to watch the video to see this for yourself.
