On October 1st, 2017, some 20,000 + people were enjoying the end of Jason Aldean’s performance, which was part of the three-day country music event the Route 91 Harvest Festival. In an instant, the unthinkable happened.
A gunman rained down fire from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 58 concertgoers and injuring at least 400 others. Thousands of terrified survivors fled the open air concert in an attempt to find cover. Some of them were injured and able to reach help in time, for others, it was too late. Their lives had been taken from them in an instant, without a clear reason by a madman named Stephen Paddock. The shooter took his own life before police were able to reach him, which will make finding the motivation behind this deadly mass shooting difficult to ascertain.
Christians must remember to pray for the victims of this tragedy and those who loved them in the coming days as they will be the toughest of their lives. Tragedies like this mass shooting, the deadliest in modern US history, only serve to remind all those who serve the Lord that life is but a vapor, a mist that is fleeting, here today, gone tomorrow.
James 4:14 “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
The Las Vegas shooting, outlined in this video is yet another reminder of the fragility of life. Making sense of the shooting is impossible. Christians must take this opportunity to share Christ with those who are suffering, to be the hands and feet of Christ and help in any way possible. This, of course, includes prayer, which is one of the most effective tools those who believe in Christ can utilize during such an unimaginable tragedy.
