In 2016, 63 law enforcement officers in the United States were fatally shot while on duty. That statistic is 66% higher than 2015. What’s going on?
Although it’s unclear why violence against police officers is on the rise, one thing is clear: It needs to stop.
Recently, two major shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge claimed the lives of 11 police officers. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
In Georgia, six officers were killed in six days. Two of these officers were Nicholas Smarr and Jody Smith, who were more than just work partners… they were best friends. Tragically, both men recently died as a result of violence against police officers.
The Bible teaches us that violence is not the answer. Matthew 5: 38-39 tells us, “Ye have heard that it hath been said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
As violence against police officers continues to grow, we must all do our part to stop it. Let us band together to pray for these fallen officers and for all officers who put their lives on the line every day to defend our safety. They are true heroes, and we must never take their bravery for granted.
