In 2004, Mel Gibson made The Passion of the Christ. Although it was made with the relatively small budget of $30 million, it will went on to make over $600 million worldwide. It was an amazing achievement for a rated R movie filmed in a foreign language. In fact, The Passion of the Christ became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. Of course, the movie wasn’t rated R due to sexual content or language but instead the depiction of Jesus’ resurrection, which was, of course, violent in nature.
The first Passion of the Christ focused mainly on Jesus’ death. It did briefly show evidence of the resurrection but it was left more as implied than shown on depth on camera. The new movie, which has been confirmed, is supposed to be more focused on the resurrection. Though the shooting of the movie has been confirmed by many, including the actor who portrayed Jesus, the exact date has not be released. There are some who believe the beginning of shooting for the movie could happen as early as this summer, which would make a 2019 or 2020 release date possible, perhaps around Easter. The presence of such movies allows us as Christians to share the message of Christ with others in a non-threatening way. It also allows us to obey the admonition in Philippians 4:8, which says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” Of course, in this case, you could change “think about” to watch!
