The apostles: Those individuals who shared Jesus’ message. Some were with Jesus before his death and resurrection. Others came later. What happened to them, and why does it matter to us today?
Many apostles were persecuted. This included imprisonment, beatings and the like. We know this occurred because of various historical writings as well as Paul’s words from the Bible that talk of persecution towards Christ followers.
The Bible speaks on many occasions about persecution and how it can be expected for those following Christ. Just like the apostles before us, we too can expect some more of persecution.
In Matthew 5:10-12 Jesus says, “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account…”
Many of the early apostles faced horrific deaths. They were tortured and ultimately died for their beliefs. All the while, they remained true to the message they professed, that Jesus was God’s son and that He rose from the dead after three days. The fact that they were martyred communicates a great truth. While there are many people who have died for something they believed in, finding a person who would die for something they knew to be a lie is unheard of. Therefore, the fact that so many of Jesus apostles died a martyrs death indicates that their story was not fictional. That Jesus really did rise again!
