In Christianity, Baptism is a holy sacrament and an ordinance of Jesus Christ. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in the Saviour, death to sin, burial of the old life and resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. Most Baptisms occur in infancy when a baby’s parents want to wash their child of original sin and set him or her on a path of goodness throughout life. But are you ever too old to be baptized? The parishioners at Community Family Church in Durbanville, Cape Town, South Africa don’t think so!
In this funny video, a 78-year-old woman named Tannie Mienie finally wants to get baptized. After the pastor recites a prayer, he tries to dip her in the water to begin the cleansing. But her legs don’t cooperate! As the crowd erupts in laughter and cheers, Tannie plugs her nose and tries to dip herself a few different ways before settling on a good old face dunk. By the end of the Baptism, Tannie, the pastor and the entire crowd are doubled over with laughter. Now this is one occasion where you know God was watching and laughing too!
As we read in Ephesians 4:4-6, “There is one body and one spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” And Tannie’s was definitely one Baptism to remember!
