Andrew Murray was a South African Christian pastor, teacher and writer, who considered missions to be “the chief end of the church.” Throughout his life, he wrote many books, one of which, entitled “Humility,” is featured on this video below. You can listen to the book and learn what the good teacher explains about humility and how it should shape us as Christians.
The Bible contains many instances of the phrase humble or the act of humility. For example, in 1 Peter 5:6-7, God’s word says, “humble yourselves, then, under God’s might hand, so that He will lift you up in His own good time. Leave all your worries with Him because He cares for you.” Another passage, Colossians 3:12 says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” James 4:10 is yet another example and says, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
As you can see from the scripture outlined above, humility is a big deal to God. We, as believers, are to humble ourselves before God. We are to allow God to lift us up, not lift up ourselves. This notion of “humbling oneself” goes against the me-first, self-promoting, prideful society where many talk about the merits of self-worth above all else. However, as we can see from God’s word, this isn’t how God intended us to act. We are not to promote ourselves or feel we “deserve” a certain life or accolades. That is up to God and what He wants us to receive. This isn’t to say we look down upon ourselves. No. As the scripture says, “we are dearly loved, God’s chosen people, He cares for us.” This means we don’t “have” to promote ourselves because we are children of a King. He will lift us up, when He is ready. Until then, we must put our faith in Him and remain humble. Listen to the book on humility by Andrew Murray to find out even more about living a life of humility.
