Was Jesus a super hero? According to this soon-to-be released Netflix show, He could be. “American Jesus” is a show based upon the comic series by the same name written by Mark Millar. The comic book stars a 12-year-old boy who realizes he is the second coming of Jesus. This “Jesus” is more super hero than savior and spends his time turning water to wine and performing other miracles.
The good thing about this series is that the author of the comic book on which it is based is a Christian. He claims to keep the story lines clean and reverent towards the character of Christ. In addition, when compared to secular shows that are full of crude language and crash storylines, this offering by Netflix is a better alternative.
When it comes to this show, one of the biggest considerations is reverence. While the creator of the show claims he is not being irreverent, is the simple fact that he made Jesus into a fictional cartoon hero itself irreverent? That is likely a judgment call for each person to make themselves. However, the Bible does address the way we should act towards God. One example of this is found in Deuteronomy 10:20-21, which says, “You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name . ‘He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.’”
This verse implies that we are to fear the Lord. This doesn’t mean being scared but instead respect or revere the Lord. Therefore, when contemplating the issue of a comic book version of Jesus, you have to wonder if that is giving the Lord the reverence He so greatly deserves.
