Because so many country artists grow up singing in their churches and know gospel melodies by heart, it isn’t at all unusual for them to record their own gospel album at some point during their career. Add to that the fact that many artists are also people of faith and it simply makes sense that the two genres of country and gospel tend to coincide. Randy Travis is a country artist who has not only recorded one such album but several gospel albums.
The third gospel album created by Travis was released in 2003 and appropriately titled “Worship & Faith.” This album contains a total of 20 songs, including several covers of traditional gospel songs. “How Great Thou Art,” “I’ll Fly Away,” and “Blessed Assurance,” are just a few of the many songs featured on this album.
While there are many songs to like on the album, the one featured below is “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” This song has been covered by many artists including Charley Pride, Tammy Wynette and even Merle Haggard. However, Travis’ version is a step above, making it the most well-known country version.
Accompanied by a small band, Travis iconic baritone voice flows through the notes of the song, communicating his passion for what he is singing with every breath, note and nuance of the piece. It is the passion with which Travis delivers his version of “Just a Closer Walk With Thee,” that makes it a favorite.
