Matthew 28: 5-6 “The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen just as He said.”
The resurrection of Jesus; it makes the negativity of the crucifixion worthwhile. Without it, the Christian faith is pointless. In other words, its a vital element. This fact makes the resurrection scene as depicted in The Passion of the Christ immensely powerful and moving. You can rewatch this beautiful scene in this video below.
In the scene, the rising sun reveals the tomb’s large stone as it is rolled away. You hear the sound of the stone as it rolls along the ground. Then, you see the inside of the tomb becoming illuminated and witness Jesus’ burial clothes deflate. Then you see Jesus himself sitting beside what were His burial garments. You see Him, clean, yet still bearing the wounds on His hands. In the background, the music intensifies and you hear drums seemingly announcing Jesus triumph over death. Then the words, “Thank you God….for what you have done for us” come across the screen.
As mentioned above, the resurrection is crucial to the whole validity of Christ’s story. If He had not been raised from the dead, there would be no restoration. There would be no substitute for sin and He would be no different than any other prophet or teacher. The fact that He was raised is the difference between Him and many others. It is how we today as Christians are able to be forgiven and make our home in heaven. Therefore, watching this scene as it might have looked is a great way to meditate on the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for us all.
