What does it mean to serve? Why should we care? Well, put simply, Jesus served. Therefore, as a Christian, it should be our goal to emulate Jesus’ example when possible. This video below explores more about this important topic by contemplating the “why” behind Jesus’ servant ministry.
Why Jesus Served?
The answer to why Jesus served will help us more clearly understand the importance of us following suit.
- Jesus Served Because He Loves Us: Serving someone means giving of oneself. It is a selfless act. That’s why when you truly love someone, you put their needs before your own. Jesus practiced this on many occasions throughout His earthly ministry and we too should seek to show love through service. The video puts it this way, “our love for others only runs as deep as our willingness to serve them.” Remember, serving and love go hand-in-hand. It’s virtually impossible to have one without the other.
- Jesus Served to Give us an Example: In John 13:15, Jesus says, “I have set an example for you that you should do as I have done for you.” He was referring in this instance to washing the disciples’ feet. Jesus led by example. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, got on His hands and feet to wash people’s dirty feet. This is the example of real-life servitude we should seek to duplicate in our daily lives.
- Jesus Served Because it’s a Reflection of the Gospel: God gave selflessly by sending His only son to earth for our sins. We didn’t deserve it. We didn’t earn it. It doesn’t even make logical sense for such a might God to stoop so low to minister to us but it is the truth. This picture of servitude is yet another reason Jesus served while here on earth.
